Social Security Disability Insurance
Social Security Disability Insurance is a program in which employees contribute from each paycheck to a fund designed to help those who fall out of the workforce into disability. Social Security taxes (FICA) are withheld from your paycheck when you work. You are only eligible for Disability Insurance Benefits if you have paid a certain amount of Social Security tax over a specific period of time.
For an individual over 30 years of age to be insured for Disability Insurance Benefits, the person must have paid FICA in no less than twenty calendar quarters during the forty calendar quarters just prior to the time your total disability began. That means that you must have worked and paid Social Security tax for five out of the last ten years before you became totally disabled. Worker's who become disabled before age 31 need fewer quarters.
An individual must prove that he or she became disabled while disability insurance coverage was in force or that person is not entitled to Disability Insurance Benefits, even if the medical condition is very serious.
Supplemental Security Income (SSI)
If you have become disabled and have not worked enough in the past 10 years to qualify for Disability Insurance Benefits or have not worked at all in the last ten years you may still be eligible for another disability payment called Supplemental Security Income (SSI).
There are two requirements to receive Supplemental Security Income Benefits. A person must be disabled and have little income or resources. With SSI, you must submit documentation of your low income (versus work history in SSD cases ).
